Hidden Gems of Italy - The Santa Maria della Pietà Church at Gran Sasso in Abruzzo
One of the most striking and mysterious sights in the Abruzzo region is the Santa Maria della Pietà Church, a small chapel perched on a rocky spur at the foot of the Gran Sasso mountain. The church dates back to the 15th century and was built by a hermit who dedicated it to the Virgin Mary after witnessing a miracle.
According to legend, a group of shepherds found a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child in a cave nearby and decided to bring it to the village. However, every time they tried to move it, the statue became heavier and heavier, until it was impossible to lift. They took this as a sign that the Madonna wanted to stay there, so they built a church around the statue, which is still venerated today.
